Gluten Free OM – My 2 Loves

January 14th, 2010 at 11:45 am by Lisa - Gluten Free Foodie
I have to tell you that I am so happy today! I met the most amazing people at Samudra Yoga and Coffee Tea & Treats in Bremerton, WA. Co-owners – Kath Mitchell and daughter Winter Niemeyer opened the Yoga Studio, coffee, tea and treat shop six months ago. The duo seem to have the perfect synergy – Kath teaches yoga upstairs and helps Winter manage the coffee shop. Winter also manages the more technical, photo presentations of the treats and Internet communications on Facebook. The Studio is located in the Evergreen Park neighborhood that is in the process of a revitalization. Their neighbors have welcomed them with open arms and an appetite for their Gluten Free and Vegan treats. I sampled a variety of Gluten Free treats (so that I could give you a first hand experience …) I tried the Chai Almond Cookies, the Chocolate Chip Biscotti and the Irish Bomb Cupcakes … all I can say is absolutely delicious! It just makes me so excited that Kath saw the need for good healthy treats and decided to offer Gluten Free and Vegan. She isn’t even Gluten Free! I appreciate that so much more when someone is looking out for us and realizes there is a need for everyone to enjoy some really great treats! While they still offer regular, gluten and dairy treats, they are very aware of the importance to keep the treats separate with dedicated equipment. The baking is done on site by a baker who is Gluten Free and well versed in the combinations and joys of Gluten Free flours. They all share a love of food and it shows in their presentation and attention to detail!
They offer Caffe Vita coffee and espresso drinks, as well as a variety of teas – black, green and herbal. They have a nice seating space inside and several areas outside that overlook the park and water. There is a courtyard with a grassy area and a brick wall with a theater theme painted on it. It was once used to show outdoor movies. How great is that? Kath said she hopes to be able to do that again this year when the weather warms up and dries up. I can only imagine how lovely it will be there in the spring and summer. I can’t wait!
I really love the logo and fun color combination. It is an Orange Octopus that represent the 8 limbs of Yoga. The turquiose color represents the water that surrounds us and makes it all flow. It ties in with the interior, which is just a delight and refreshing when you walk in. The colors are beautifully coordinated to go with the logo by using shades of turquoise on the walls that are painted with green-eco friendly products. All of the woods are refurbished and they even repurposed their old garage door along one of the walls downstairs. The insulation is denim and the display cases are re-purposed and refurbished. This is a very well thought out space that has bits of charm from the pearl shell chandelier in the reception area in the yoga studio to the photos, boats and paddles that add to the all nautical theme downstairs. There is an interior staircase to walk downstairs after class and enjoy your treats and meet some new friends. You can also enter the coffee, tea and treat shop from the outside as well. There is street parking and a small parking lot behind the building.

Gluten Free Cinnamon DONUTS !!!

November 21st, 2009 at 9:44 am by Lisa - Gluten Free Foodie

Not sure if you like donuts Who doesn’t???
YES … I said it …
GLUTEN FREE CINNAMON DONUTS …

Hopefully you have a really good, strong cup of coffee while you read this … so that you can wake up and run to the store to get some too!

Kinnikinnik Foods – makes them and you can find them in the freezer section at Town & Country, Central Market and Whole Foods Market. I put mine in a small bowl with a paper towel on top and heat it in the microwave for about 22 seconds. You get 6 donuts in the box so you can share or save them for special occasions. The donuts are Gluten Free, Wheat Free, Dairy Free and Soy Free. They also come in glaze, but I really like the Cinnamon!

This is the perfect treat for a special day like Thanksgiving or a birthday when you just want a little extra “sweet treat” for you or your extra special gluten intolerant sweetie in your life! The best part is that you can stay in your jammies … pop them in the microwave … make the coffee and you don’t even have to go out the door … well as long as you plan ahead and get them the next time you go to the grocery store!

Living Gluten Free isn’t so bad after all …

Enjoy!

Gluten Free Treats – Enjoy Life Snickerdoodle Cookies …

October 26th, 2009 at 12:58 pm by Lisa - Gluten Free Foodie

I just discovered Enjoy Life Soft Baked Snickerdoodle Cookies and I am hooked! I needed a little pick me up after a busy morning and thought I would make a cup of Stash’s Orange Spice Black Tea … the perfect pairing for these cinnamony soft cookies.

You know me by now, I read the packaging and really love this one! The back says – Have you ever heard a belly laugh? Their business is about making your insides happy! Gluten Free and made without the eight most common allergens. There is also a suggestion for more fun food ideas to use the cookies to make a pie crust with them or warm them up in the microwave for a fresh baked taste. I really appreciate it when companies take the time to think about things like this instead of just putting a product out in the market to get in the game. I applaud the team that probably puts in numerous hours just trying to come up with products that are more than just palatable. Products that are actually tasty and make you want more! I must say that I am not usually a fan of a soft cookie but this one won me over. I like knowing that it doesn’t contain wheat, dairy, peanuts, tree nuts, egg, soy, fish or shellfish. Granted the last two should never be in a cookie but it is really hard to make a yummy treat that even kids would eat without the basic foundations of egg and butter. Even if you can still have everything but Gluten in your diet, it is nice to expand your palate and know that you can still enjoy life without them!
Enjoy!
