Portraits of Eastsiders

January 13th, 2012 at 11:22 am by Chad Coleman

Well 2012 is starting to roll along and I’ve had the pleasure of making portraits of some interesting people to start the year. Above, outgoing Bellevue council memberĀ Grant Degginger at the Lane Powell offices in Seattle. The portrait was assigned to accompany a Q&A piece about his tenure on the council and as mayor for the Bellevue Reporter. More photos after the jump…

Football collision | Photo of the Day

November 12th, 2011 at 8:25 am by Chad Coleman

Eastside Catholic Crusader DB Markell Sanders, left, and LB Zane Allen collide helmet-to-helmet while attempting to tackle Wolverine Jack Meggs during a 3A state playoff game at Bellevue on Friday, November 11, 2011. Sanders was briefly shaken up on the play. Sometimes you don’t know what you have until the play is over, and this elicited an audible “whoa” from me on the sidelines. I’m very happy both players were ok.

Note: This is a part of my effort to share single images here on Focus Northwest in the a “Photo of the Day” style, but it will admittedly be sporadic – aka not daily – with my work responsibilities. Hope you enjoy…

Above, four firefighters cross the Snoqualmie River to help establish a highline for rope rescue during a training session, May 4, 2011. More photos after the jump…

Transition Academy Graduation | Multimedia

June 25th, 2010 at 12:10 pm by Chad Coleman

Here is a recent multimedia piece I produced about the Lake Washington School District’s Transition Academy Graduation on June 10. This was the final piece in an ongoing series about the program by the Redmond Reporter that started in the fall of 2009. I photographed several assignments this spring for the series including a recent graduate on his work out regimen.

I have much to learn and improve during my transition from a photojournalist to visual journalist. It is an ongoing, self-taught process gleaning knowledge from blogs and people established in the field, mixed with a bunch of trial & error. It is a bumpy road these days, but I hope that will smooth out with time invested and experience.

Spring Baseball | The boys of summer start early…

April 9th, 2010 at 11:19 am by Chad Coleman

As the Seattle Mariners and MLB ramp up their season for the summer, local high schools and college baseball teams are in full swing. We’re not talking a warm summer day at the ballpark, but ducking between showers and cold fingers — for players and this photographer — this time of year. Above, Mercer Island baseball starting pitcher Max Dammeier throws a pitch at Sammamish HS last week. A set of photos from recent area games after the jump…
