Year in Photos | 2011

December 28th, 2011 at 2:41 pm by Chad Coleman

In line with the tradition of looking back at the past year, here is selection of photos from 2011 in chronological order. Some of the images are simply among my favorites of from the year, while others are reminders pointing to the stories of 2011. While most are specific to my Eastside coverage area, some give a local nod to a larger story. As with all lists, they are never complete, but enjoy and have a safe and Happy New Year! Christmas tree tie down | Photo of the Day

December 2nd, 2011 at 6:14 pm by Chad Coleman

Bill Bastine, of Sammamish, secures a tree with twine to his vehicle at McMurtrey’s Red-Wood Christmas Tree Farm in Redmond on Wednesday, November 30, 2011. This is one of my favorite images from a photo assignment at a local tree tree farm… you can see more images in a slideshow on the Redmond Reporter site.

Girls 3A state swim and dive championships

November 15th, 2011 at 10:47 am by Chad Coleman

Ciara Hu, of Oak Harbor High School, swims in the final heat of the 200-yard individual medley event during the WIAA 3A girls state swim and dive championship at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way on Saturday, November 12, 2011. I have covered state swimming for many years now at the King County Aquatic Center, and this is only the second time I have been allowed access to the underwater viewing tunnel. I tried for – and was denied – access to the catwalk above the pool for a fresh angle, but don’t worry, I’ll ask again next time… “Pretty please, with sugar on top.” More photos from the meet after the jump…

Football collision | Photo of the Day

November 12th, 2011 at 8:25 am by Chad Coleman

Eastside Catholic Crusader DB Markell Sanders, left, and LB Zane Allen collide helmet-to-helmet while attempting to tackle Wolverine Jack Meggs during a 3A state playoff game at Bellevue on Friday, November 11, 2011. Sanders was briefly shaken up on the play. Sometimes you don’t know what you have until the play is over, and this elicited an audible “whoa” from me on the sidelines. I’m very happy both players were ok.

Note: This is a part of my effort to share single images here on Focus Northwest in the a “Photo of the Day” style, but it will admittedly be sporadic – aka not daily – with my work responsibilities. Hope you enjoy…

Stone Gardens indoor climbing gym’s┬ároped climbing space at Crossroads in Bellevue on Tuesday, October 25, 2011. The gym also has two large bouldering (unroped) climbing spaces, as well was a weight lifting and exercise area. I got to check out the new business for a piece in the Bellevue Reporter. Pumpkin patch at Serres Farm in Redmond

October 19th, 2011 at 4:07 pm by Chad Coleman

Above, Sally Roos, age 4, takes her picks to a wheelbarrow at the pumpkin patch at Serres Farm in Redmond on Tuesday, October 4, 2011. Sure as the seasons change, I got the call to photograph a stand alone feature photo of a pumpkin farm. I have to admit it was a nice, quiet afternoon in the country as nearly every other area photojournalist was crowding along a walkway at Sea-Tac airport for the return home of Amanda Knox. Presidential hopeful Mitt Romney talks trade at Microsoft

October 14th, 2011 at 2:25 pm by Chad Coleman

Above, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney speaks about trade during an appearance at Microsoft in Redmond on Thursday, October 13, 2011. The media was out in full force for Romney’s stop here in Washington state yesterday. Not knowing if members of the press would be restricted in movement around the room, I carried the big glass — a 400mm, f/2.8 — that is most used on the sports sidelines. Surprisingly, we photographers had good freedom of movement, but I had hauled the heavy glass, so I was going to shoot it. I know a personal habit is to shoot a wide angle lens a lot, so going ‘tight’ was good mental exercise. I enjoyed making some nice detail shots of the candidate. More photos after the jump…

Worker scraping window, feels like Halloween | Photo

October 12th, 2011 at 11:34 am by Chad Coleman

A worker scrapes a layer of tinting off an external window during the construction remodel of the new grocer, Your Local Market, at 410 Bellevue Way NE in downtown Bellevue on Wednesday, October 12, 2011. Just in time for October, I made this ghostly image during an assignment this morning… reminds me of a horror movie poster.
