Portraits of Eastsiders

January 13th, 2012 at 11:22 am by Chad Coleman

Well 2012 is starting to roll along and I’ve had the pleasure of making portraits of some interesting people to start the year. Above, outgoing Bellevue council member Grant Degginger at the Lane Powell offices in Seattle. The portrait was assigned to accompany a Q&A piece about his tenure on the council and as mayor for the Bellevue Reporter. More photos after the jump…

Female boxer Alex Love has her eye on the 2012 Olympic Games

April 22nd, 2011 at 10:33 am by Chad Coleman

Olympic-hopeful boxer Alex Love poses for a portrait at Ring Sports United in Bellevue, March 1, 2011. I was assigned to photograph a female boxer for the Bellevue Reporter before she moved to Colorado to train for a chance at a spot on the women’s 2012 Olympic team. I walk into the RSU gym in the North end of Bellevue and met a confident athlete, with work-ethic, drive and a great attitude – even if she likes throw a verbal jab once in a while. More photos after the jump…

Track cyclist Jennie Reed | Multimedia

August 12th, 2010 at 1:20 pm by Chad Coleman

Once the “fastest woman in the world” track cyclist Jennie Reed  has come out of retirement in search of an Olympic medal in the women’s team pursuit at the London games in 2012. Sometimes on assignment you are just plain lucky, as was the case about Jennie. I was photographing the FSA Grand Prix races at the Velodrome in Marymoor Park when I over heard the announcer mention Reed was from Kirkland and had recently donned her race gear again. Reed had won the Women’s Elite class Keirin race that night, just three months after getting back on a bike.  And that’s it… the simple truth of how a story was born.

Apolo Anton Ohno, eight-time speed skating Winter Olympic medalist, spoke to students at Chinook Middle School in Bellevue on Friday, March 12, 2010. Ohno’s message about the perils of underage drinking was part of his involvement with Ask, Listen, Learn. More photos of Ohno after the jump…

Curling | Video

February 9th, 2010 at 3:23 pm by Chad Coleman

As the Olympic Winter Games are upon us at our neighbors to the north in Vancouver, I had the opportunity to check out the sport of curling at the Granite Curling Club in Seattle. The club is the only  ice dedicated to curling in the Western United States. Besides winning a friendly a wager of coffee for best rock throw from Mercer Island Reporter sports writer Megan Managan, I dusted off the video camera that I seemed to have shelved in recent months and put together a motion piece. I’m always learning as this is a new arena of storytelling for me, and definitely some areas to improve. Favorite shot — near the middle of the video — was the poor man’s “Steadicam” as gracious club member Tom FitzGerald pushed me in a chair down the adjacent sheet of ice for a full length view of a curling shot.
