Above, outgoing Bellevue council member Grant Degginger at the Lane Powell offices in Seattle. Fun in the rain | Photo

October 12th, 2011 at 11:24 am by Chad Coleman

I’ve thought many times about a “Photo of the Day” series here on the blog, but since I run this photo blog solo for the news group it just isn’t feasible. I’m going to make an effort to share more single frames without painting myself into a schedule. We’ll see how it goes… Above, is a photo from an upcoming piece in The Scene. Thankfully no camera bodies were hurt in the making of this image. Happy splashing!

Photographing food, learning every time out

October 4th, 2011 at 1:05 pm by Chad Coleman

Above, bulgogi bibimbap (beef) before it is stirred prior to eating at Oma Bap in Bellevue for a Dine column in the September issue of The Scene. I have to admit when I came onboard as a staff photographer with the Reporter newspaper group six years ago I had never photographed food once in my life. Part of my work was to shoot art to accompany a monthly food column for the Mercer Island Reporter (which continues today), so I ran to the bookstore and leafed through a handfull of illustrated cookbooks to get and idea of what was out there. Since then I’ve shot a couple food assingments a month, each with their own challenges. I always strive to improve and really present the food in an interesting or appealing way. Still lots of room to grow, but my batting average is rising. More photos after the jump…

Retro Fabulous | A fashion photo story

August 26th, 2011 at 3:23 pm by Chad Coleman

As a staff photojournalist for a news group, I am called upon to photograph a wide variety subjects and this is my turn as a fashion photographer. The fashion piece for The Scene featuring styles that give a nod to the past was brought together visually in a collaboration two lovely ladies Jaymee Espinueva, above, and Mollie Ruiz-Hopper, below. To say the shoot was fun is an understatement, and I do believe we were nearly waist deep in wardrobe! Thanks Mollie and Jaymee for bringing a great attitude to the project!

Taiko Drumming

July 15th, 2011 at 2:40 pm by Chad Coleman

I had no idea what a taiko drum was before this assignment for The Scene, but now I’m in the know. Above, taiko drummer Jaymi Matsudaira plays during a multiple-exposure  photograph made in camera at the Japanese Community and Cultural Center in Seattle. The sound was big, the motion graceful and the photos fun. More photos after the jump…

Allen Velasco bares his ink for a feature story on tattoos in the professional workplace I photographed in the current issue of The Scene magazine. Not my first rodeo shooting inked art, but fun to meet new people as always! More photos of inked professionals after the jump…
