Soccer | Mercer Island at Juanita

October 14th, 2010 at 10:44 am by Chad Coleman

I’ll be the first to admit that soccer is not my favorite sport as a fan, but it is a challenge to photograph. Fast ball movement, limited scoring opportunities and a lack of regularly set plays add up to make it difficult for a photographer to anticipate where the best image will happen. My advice to any aspiring sports photographer is to go shoot soccer to sharpen your skills following fast action with the camera, and then adapt that to any other sport. The image above was made on the closest thing to a set play  in my opinion, the corner kick.

Above, Rebel goalkeeper Niki Fausset, in blue, blocks a shot on goal as teammates Tori Lee (19), Rachel Richardson (2) and Mercer Island’s Tara Nielson (11) work for position during a game at Juanita High School in Kirkland on Tuesday, October 12, 2010. Juanita beat the Islanders 1-0.

Friday Night Lights is upon us, a season that myself and a throng of like-minded folks smell fall in the air and get a little excited.  Above, the Newport High School football captains, from left, Louie Jachim, Matt Murray, James Dupar, Kevin Martin and Nick Clifford happily obliged a location I had spotted AFTER last year’s preview photo. Transition Academy Graduation | Multimedia

June 25th, 2010 at 12:10 pm by Chad Coleman

Here is a recent multimedia piece I produced about the Lake Washington School District’s Transition Academy Graduation on June 10. This was the final piece in an ongoing series about the program by the Redmond Reporter that started in the fall of 2009. I photographed several assignments this spring for the series including a recent graduate on his work out regimen.

I have much to learn and improve during my transition from a photojournalist to visual journalist. It is an ongoing, self-taught process gleaning knowledge from blogs and people established in the field, mixed with a bunch of trial & error. It is a bumpy road these days, but I hope that will smooth out with time invested and experience.

Andrew Young, an inspiring Transition Academy graduate

May 17th, 2010 at 12:50 pm by Chad Coleman

Sometimes you meet special people on assignment, and one such inspiration is Andrew Young. A 2009 Lake Washington School District Transition Academy graduate, Andrew also graduated from Eastlake High School in Sammamish. I was recently tasked to photograph Andrew during his workout session at the Redmond Athletic Club. More photos after the jump…

Blaine Lints loves to run

April 22nd, 2010 at 11:10 am by Chad Coleman

Blaine Lints loves to run. Seriously. I was assigned to photograph the Newport High School junior for a feature about the aspiring ultra-endurance athlete. Blaine told me he has already run 60 miles continuously, and now has his sights set on 130 miles in 24 hours for an upcoming Relay For Life event in May. Like I said — Blaine Lints loves to run. Spring Baseball | The boys of summer start early…

April 9th, 2010 at 11:19 am by Chad Coleman

As the Seattle Mariners and MLB ramp up their season for the summer, local high schools and college baseball teams are in full swing. We’re not talking a warm summer day at the ballpark, but ducking between showers and cold fingers — for players and this photographer — this time of year. Above, Mercer Island baseball starting pitcher Max Dammeier throws a pitch at Sammamish HS last week. A set of photos from recent area games after the jump…

Basketball 4A State Tourney | Days 1 & 2

March 5th, 2010 at 4:09 pm by Chad Coleman

It’s WIAA state basketball tournament time, and I spent the last two days at the Tacoma Dome following several 4A teams from the Eastside — Skyline boys, Newport girls and Lake Washington boys. Lots of  action, but I still try to vary my shooting postion or style to keep it from getting to look to uniform. Enjoy these and I’ll add some more posts as the 3A tournament kicks into gear next week. More images after the jump…
