Girls 3A state swim and dive championships

November 15th, 2011 at 10:47 am by Chad Coleman

Ciara Hu, of Oak Harbor High School, swims in the final heat of the 200-yard individual medley event during the WIAA 3A girls state swim and dive championship at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way on Saturday, November 12, 2011. I have covered state swimming for many years now at the King County Aquatic Center, and this is only the second time I have been allowed access to the underwater viewing tunnel. I tried for – and was denied – access to the catwalk above the pool for a fresh angle, but don’t worry, I’ll ask again next time… “Pretty please, with sugar on top.” More photos from the meet after the jump…

Football collision | Photo of the Day

November 12th, 2011 at 8:25 am by Chad Coleman

Eastside Catholic Crusader DB Markell Sanders, left, and LB Zane Allen collide helmet-to-helmet while attempting to tackle Wolverine Jack Meggs during a 3A state playoff game at Bellevue on Friday, November 11, 2011. Sanders was briefly shaken up on the play. Sometimes you don’t know what you have until the play is over, and this elicited an audible “whoa” from me on the sidelines. I’m very happy both players were ok.

Note: This is a part of my effort to share single images here on Focus Northwest in the a “Photo of the Day” style, but it will admittedly be sporadic – aka not daily – with my work responsibilities. Hope you enjoy…

Portraits to start 2011

February 3rd, 2011 at 4:02 pm by Chad Coleman

Theater owner Arif Amaani stands in the seats at the Totem Lake Cinemas in Kirkland. The theater specializes in Bollywood films, and was featured as part of an ongoing series on Totem Lake Mall by the Kirkland Reporter. In this series of portraits you find a lot of underexposed (read: black) backgrounds. This is an easy way to clean up clutter or less than optimal backgrounds that I find myself subjected to all the time. It also adds drama and attention to your subject. More photos after the jump…

Soccer | Mercer Island at Juanita

October 14th, 2010 at 10:44 am by Chad Coleman

I’ll be the first to admit that soccer is not my favorite sport as a fan, but it is a challenge to photograph. Fast ball movement, limited scoring opportunities and a lack of regularly set plays add up to make it difficult for a photographer to anticipate where the best image will happen. My advice to any aspiring sports photographer is to go shoot soccer to sharpen your skills following fast action with the camera, and then adapt that to any other sport. The image above was made on the closest thing to a set play  in my opinion, the corner kick.

Above, Rebel goalkeeper Niki Fausset, in blue, blocks a shot on goal as teammates Tori Lee (19), Rachel Richardson (2) and Mercer Island’s Tara Nielson (11) work for position during a game at Juanita High School in Kirkland on Tuesday, October 12, 2010. Juanita beat the Islanders 1-0.

Prep Football Preview | Bellevue Edition

August 27th, 2010 at 8:30 am by Chad Coleman

Friday Night Lights is upon us, a season that myself and a throng of like-minded folks smell fall in the air and get a little excited.  Above, the Newport High School football captains, from left, Louie Jachim, Matt Murray, James Dupar, Kevin Martin and Nick Clifford happily obliged a location I had spotted AFTER last year’s preview photo. More photos after the jump…

Rain & Football

October 19th, 2009 at 11:53 am by Chad Coleman

Foul weather is part of the Pacific Northwest in the fall and winter, and that can make for some interesting evenings under the lights. Newport hosted Eastlake for their homecoming game on Friday night, and as luck would have it for this photographer, some of the more nasty shooting weather in recent memory. Personally, I’d rather have the snow than the torrential down pour, but the bright side was it was a warm rain. The following images are some quick favorites that showcase the conditions for players and fans… Be sure you have an umbrella handy before viewing.

Katy, TX Football | Audio slideshow

October 16th, 2009 at 2:51 pm by Chad Coleman

I worked up this audio slideshow from the road during a trip to cover Bellevue High School at Katy, TX, and to experience high school football in the Lonestar State. The sports editor at the Katy Times, Nick Georgandis, was great tour guide and obliged a quick interview to get some town and football history. Admittedly, I am learning on the go for audio and video capture, but enjoy the challenge none the less.

Two stereotypes were lived up to during our trip: the people of texas are very friendly and they are serious about their football.

Fall Sports Portraits

September 17th, 2009 at 3:01 pm by Chad Coleman

Fall sports season is here and the local high schools are gearing up for back to school and big dose of Friday Night Lights. One staple of a newspaper’s sports section is a preview of the high school football season. As a photographer, I have developed stylistic tendencies –and while keeping with that– I strive to create a “different” portrait for each team’s preview. I readily admit to favoring a wide-angle lens, shot from a low vantage point for sports portraits, as I feel it lends to the bigger-than-life, heroic view of athletes by much of society. The following take is my attempt to differentiate… Feel free to let me know your thoughts in the comments.
