Portraits of Eastsiders

January 13th, 2012 at 11:22 am by Chad Coleman

Well 2012 is starting to roll along and I’ve had the pleasure of making portraits of some interesting people to start the year. Above, outgoing Bellevue council member Grant Degginger at the Lane Powell offices in Seattle. The portrait was assigned to accompany a Q&A piece about his tenure on the council and as mayor for the Bellevue Reporter. More photos after the jump…

Girls 3A state swim and dive championships

November 15th, 2011 at 10:47 am by Chad Coleman

Ciara Hu, of Oak Harbor High School, swims in the final heat of the 200-yard individual medley event during the WIAA 3A girls state swim and dive championship at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way on Saturday, November 12, 2011. I have covered state swimming for many years now at the King County Aquatic Center, and this is only the second time I have been allowed access to the underwater viewing tunnel. I tried for – and was denied – access to the catwalk above the pool for a fresh angle, but don’t worry, I’ll ask again next time… “Pretty please, with sugar on top.” More photos from the meet after the jump…

Football collision | Photo of the Day

November 12th, 2011 at 8:25 am by Chad Coleman

Eastside Catholic Crusader DB Markell Sanders, left, and LB Zane Allen collide helmet-to-helmet while attempting to tackle Wolverine Jack Meggs during a 3A state playoff game at Bellevue on Friday, November 11, 2011. Sanders was briefly shaken up on the play. Sometimes you don’t know what you have until the play is over, and this elicited an audible “whoa” from me on the sidelines. I’m very happy both players were ok.

Note: This is a part of my effort to share single images here on Focus Northwest in the a “Photo of the Day” style, but it will admittedly be sporadic – aka not daily – with my work responsibilities. Hope you enjoy…

November 2nd, 2011 at 3:18 pm by Chad Coleman

Stone Gardens indoor climbing gym’s roped climbing space at Crossroads in Bellevue on Tuesday, October 25, 2011. The gym also has two large bouldering (unroped) climbing spaces, as well was a weight lifting and exercise area. I got to check out the new business for a piece in the Bellevue Reporter. Quick hits, a sports feature portrait

September 27th, 2011 at 2:25 pm by Chad Coleman

The ability to adapt and think quickly are traits that will serve a photojournalist well… from a breaking news scenario to a simple deadline assignment dropped in your lap. Last week I had one of those photo assignments that cropped up at the last minute and had to form a plan on my drive to the location. The photo was slated as the main art for a two part sports feature about concussions in youth sports for the Bellevue Reporter.  The subject was no longer able to play football but was helping assist the coaches of his high school football team. I wanted to show the football aspect as well as the student-athlete, and had the the idea that looking out of a helmet may add visual pop. I think it worked out well. Above, senior Blake Miller photographed at Issaquah High School on Monday, September 19, 2011. Oh, and to follow up on a prior post on environmental portraits, this was all natural light.

Jumping rope goes high action

July 19th, 2011 at 10:21 am by Chad Coleman

To be honest when I received a short email assignment requesting me to photograph a jump rope team for the Kirkland Reporter, I immediately thought of 9-year-olds on a school playground. What I found  was a group of dedicated athletes with some high-flying moves that just happened to incorporate jump ropes. To be sure this is not your momma’s Double Dutch. Above, members of the Hot Dog USA fusion team work on their routine prior to the World Championships, held over the July 4 weekend in Washington D.C. The team includes Jake Anderson, Nick Woodard, Colleen McCary, Chris Brown, Farris Rae and Robbie Csontos. More photos after the jump…

The Mount Si High School Wildcats celebrate two early runs after Trevor Lane (2) beat a throw to the plate during the WIAA 3A state baseball championship game at Cheney Stadium in Tacoma, May 28, 2011. Mount Si beat Shorewood 5-4 for the state title.

It was prep spring sports state tournament time this past weekend, and I covered baseball at Cheney Stadium in Tacoma, and softball at the Regional Athletic Complex in Lacey. Here are some of my favorite images and moments from the weekned. More photos after the jump…

Female boxer Alex Love has her eye on the 2012 Olympic Games

April 22nd, 2011 at 10:33 am by Chad Coleman

Olympic-hopeful boxer Alex Love poses for a portrait at Ring Sports United in Bellevue, March 1, 2011. I was assigned to photograph a female boxer for the Bellevue Reporter before she moved to Colorado to train for a chance at a spot on the women’s 2012 Olympic team. I walk into the RSU gym in the North end of Bellevue and met a confident athlete, with work-ethic, drive and a great attitude – even if she likes throw a verbal jab once in a while. More photos after the jump…

Mercer Island Rotary Half Marathon 2011

March 21st, 2011 at 3:39 pm by Chad Coleman

Racers break from the starting line of the 10K race during the annual Rotary Run on Mercer Island on Sunday, March 20, 2011. Last year, I shared my assignment that focused purely on a cover photo for the Mercer Island Reporter. This year I was tasked to get broad coverage, so that meant being in the thick of things near the race start and event village at the Community Center at Mercer View. More photos after the jump…

You be the photo editor… Choose the best basketball action frame.

February 18th, 2011 at 1:17 pm by Chad Coleman

Skyline forward Kasen Williams (25) breaks free for dunk against Woodinville during a SeaKing 4A district tournament game at Juanita High School in Kirkland on Tuesday, February 15, 2011. I have several frames from the sequence, but these three are the peak action images. So, if you’re my photo editor which of these is your favorite frame? Which do you select for print — 1, 2 or 3? Leave you choice and why in the comments, and I’ll drop my answer and why  in a little later.
